Personally I think this is one of the major features we have been waiting for. With Azure DevOps you could select which region your instance is hosted in. Which is great if you want to control where your data resides.
GitHub was always hosted in the USA and if you wanted to host this in e.g. Europe, you needed to get GitHub Enterprise Cloud and run it on your own hardware. Coming from hosted services like Azure DevOps, this sounded like a step backwards.
At the end of October, you can now use an European location, and Australia, Asia and Latin America is coming soon.
The ability to host your source code in Europe is a must for a large amount of enterprises, so with this new offering GitHub will become a feasible option.
A couple of days ago I noticed a new icon in the GitHub website. It appears that all Copilot subscriptions now have access to Copilot Chat on the GH website.
There is a button at the top (and at the bottom) to invoke Copilot Chat and it will help you understand the contents of a repository, explain code constructs, find issues with action workflows and assist writing Pull Requests.
A smaller upgrade, but nice to see updates to accessibility.
Coding Corner
The C4 model is a method to describe architectures and consist of, surprisingly, 4 levels. But how do you actually create these diagrams?
Well, there is a tool for that; structurizr. The below guide shows how to use this tool.
Although a bit biased as it comes from Docker themselves, it is an interesting list to get things in perspective. When they announced the different license model, I did not really know what that implied.
So this overview is helpful to see how everything aligns.
Azure Updates & Insights
Microsoft has a FinOps toolkit; a set of practices, tools and guidance to help you with your FinOps journey. They did some nice upgrades in version 0.5 like more extensive workbooks, details on FOCUS, PowerBI reports and more.
.NET Nook
It is pretty easy to be able to run .NET apps on arm64 devices, but do you know how to target this devices explicitly? Because if you use AnyCPU, then the application will run with x64 emulation on an ARM processor.
With Visual Studio 2022, you can prefer the arm64 processor. How? read the below article to find out.
